For All Souls Day

by the Altar Guild of St. Augustine's

Many of the items we use in our worship have been engraved and presented to the Altar Guild in memory of our friends and relations. On All Souls Day, we would especially remember: Mary B. Baird, Mary L. Hampton, John and Mary Menn, Sue Lew Lime, Mary A. Pitts, Fred and Marie Kergerris (1949), Evington Foote Sharling (1959), Nova Swartz (1963), Percy Minshall (1892 − 1934), Katherine Mary Matthew, Diana Rasken (1962 − 1943), Daniel E. Shackman (1900 − 1961), Katherine Davenport Treichel (1888), Sanford Anderson (1927), Horace Melville Dudley (1907 − 1914), the Rev. Herbert Bowers, D.D., the Confirmation Class of Spring 1957, and John Barrett (1858 − 1934), and Anita Wacker (2001).

If you would like to give an item for worship as a gift or in the memory of someone dear to you, please speak to Hartshorn. We could then always remember them in our community.

In thanksgiving and remembrance for the gifts we have received, we thank you O God.

A Modern Version of the 23rd Psalm
by Tokio Megashie, a Japanese writer

The Lord is my Pacesetter − I shall not rush.
He makes me stop for quiet intervals,
He provides me with images of stillness which restore my serenity,
He leads me in ways of efficiency through calmness of mind,
And His guidance is peace.
Even though I have a great many things to accomplish each day, I will not fret,
For His presence is here,
His timelessness, His all importance, will keep me I balance.
He prepares refreshment and renewal in the midst of my activity,
By anointing my mind with His oils of tranquility,
My cup of joyous energy overflows.
Truly harmony and effectiveness shall be the fruits of my hours,
For I shall walk in the Pace of my Lord
And dwell in His House forever.

An Open Letter to the Membership of St. Augustine's
by the Reverend Hartshorn Murphy

I write to inform you of my decision to retire as Rector of St. Augustine's, effective Dec. 31st of this year.

This decision was not made lightly or painlessly. This parish has been our home now for some thirteen years. MORE…

A Stewardship Parable
by The Rev. Chad Minifie
Again the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls: on finding one pearl of great value he went and sold all that he had and bought it." (Matthew 13:45-46) One day, a merchant met God on the way to town. God held the most magnificent pearl the merchant had ever seen. The merchant was struck by the pearl's beauty and shape. MORE…

The Coming of Christianity to the British Isles
by the Reverend Hartshorn Murphy
Some say that Jesus himself visited Britain during the hidden years before his public ministry… If he did come to Britain it was probably as a youth, in the company of Joseph of Arimathea, the rich man who, after the crucifixion, obtained his body from Pilate and laid it in the tomb. Glastonbury Abbey had nothing to say of any visit by Jesus, but its account of its beginnings makes much of Joseph. MORE…

On the Calling of a New Rector
by Darrel Menthe, Senior "Vestry" Warden
I suppose that many of us may have thought at one time or another something like, "I cannot imagine this place without Hartshorn!" Now we are called to do just that. However, unlike the Roman Catholic Church or other denominations, our priests are not assigned to us from some higher ecclesiastical authority. Our Episcopal tradition is that the congregation – through the vestry – calls the new rector. MORE…

A Prayer of Responsibility for Children
by Ina Hughes from Moments of Transcendence
We pray for children who put chocolate fingers everywhere, who like to be tickled, who stomp in puddles and ruin their new pants, who sneak popsicles before supper, who erase holes in math workbooks, who can never find their shoes. MORE…
