AIDS WALK Los Angeles
by The Rev. Pat Hendrickson

Join the St. Augustine team for AIDS WALK Los Angeles on Sunday, October 15, 2006. The 10K Walk begins and ends at San Vicente Boulevard, between Melrose Avenue and Santa Monica Boulevard.

St. Augustine has been in the forefront of AIDS ministry for Los Angeles County. The first AIDS mass in the diocese of Los Angeles was held at St. Augustine's. Our parishioners helped raise funds for Project New Hope − low cost housing for persons with HIV/AIDS and was one of the first to create a Memorial Plaque for members who died of AIDS. We can all be a part of this proud tradition. For those who wish to walk, registration forms are available on the patio before and after services. Those who are unable to walk may pledge for those who are. For more information, contact: Darlene Ritz-Genece at (310) 559-6824.

Newcomers: If you are new to St. A's and would like to explore a more formal relationship with us, we encourage you to attend the Fall Newcomer's and Inquirers' Classes to be held from 7:30-9:30 p.m. Friday, October 20th and 12 noon − 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 22nd. (With dessert on Friday and lunch on Sunday provided). New Member Sunday, for those who, following the class decide to join the church, is Sunday October 29th. Those desiring to be baptized or to receive the sacrament of marriage are required to attend a newcomer's class prior to receiving those sacraments. Sign up is on the patio or you may register by email: carrie@saint-augustine.org.

Fifth Sunday Breakfast: Everyone is welcome to join us for a community breakfast on Sunday, October 29, 2006 from 9:15 − 10:15 a.m. There will be no classes that day so that all ages can participate in the fellowship.

Baptisms: The sacrament of holy baptism will be offered on All Saint's Sunday, November 5, 2006 at the 10:30 a.m. service. Speak to a member of the clergy if you are interested in this for yourself or for your children.

Give yourself a break …
Come to a Half-Day Prayer Retreat
Right here at St. Augustine's
Saturday, November 18th from 9:00 a.m. − 1:00 p.m.
Led by Spiritual Director and Retreat Leader, Ann Jaqua

We will explore various prayer practices, including walking the Labyrinth, so that you might find what best suits you.

Film Night, Thursday, October 12, 6:30 p.m.

The movie "Millions" by Danny Boyle will be featured this month. "Can anyone be truly good?" is the tagline for the film. Ethics, being human and the soul are themes that come to the forefront in this masterfully written, directed and acted, fun and very rare film when a 5 year old finds a bag of "Pounds" with a few days to spend it before the currency is switched to "Euros." Popcorn, lemonade and sweets will be provided. The film is rated "G" and all ages are welcome.

Winter Family Retreat at the Episcopal Camp at Wrightwood, January 19-21, 2007

This year the Fall Family Retreat scheduled to be held at Camp Stevens in Julian has been re-scheduled for a Winter Camp at our Episcopal Camp in Wrightwood, California. Nestled in the beautiful San Gabriel Mountains at an altitude of 6,000 feet, the mountain setting is perfect for winter activities. There is a warm fireplace as well as plenty of hot chocolate. Plan for fellowship, fun and maybe a little skiing at the near by Mountain High Ski Resort. Save the date for this not to be missed parish event. One of the cabins there was refurbished through a grant from St. A's and is named "St. Augustine by-the-Sea Cabin." Look for it when you go.

Liberal Christianity is Paying for its Sins
Reprint of article by Charlotte Allen, L.A. Times July 9, 2006
The accelerating fragmentation of the strife-torn Episcopal Church USA, in which several parishes and even a few dioceses are opting out of the church, isn't simply about gay bishops, the blessing of same-sex unions or the election of a woman as presiding bishop. It also is about the meltdown of liberal Christianity … MORE

Episcopalians seek to follow Jesus' own understanding of scripture when he identified two commandments from the Torah (Deuteronomy 6:5, Leviticus 19:18) "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength" and "You shall love your neighbor as yourself" as greater than any other portions of Scripture (Matthew 22:36-40) … MORE
