Why You Should Try Teaching Sunday School

by Pam Schmidt

Last year I decided to try my hand at being a Sunday school teacher. Although I had never done it before, and never even taught a group of children before, I was encouraged to give it a whirl after being told that the lessons were planned out and all I needed to do was to bring myself, a snack and some creativity. It also bolstered me to know that I was teaching the class with someone else.

It has been my experience that when I try a new venture, the things I worry about never happen, and I end up taking something away from the experience that I never expect to. The same thing was true of teaching Sunday school. I was worried that my inexperience as a teacher would show and the children would sense my fear (yes, fear) and the class would get out of hand.

Of course, that did not happen. The lesson plans are so well thought out that even a novice can teach them. The best part of the lesson is that there are many different activities to choose from so that once the group begins to tire of one activity, there is another that is easy to jump right into. The hour is up before you know it.

What surprised me was how much I learned teaching Sunday school. The lesson plans included games, stories and discussion questions that really bring home the Bible lessons for the day. I found that I came away from a Sunday in which I taught Sunday school and attended church with a deeper spiritual experience that carried me through the week in a way that church alone did not. For that reason alone, I plan to teach again this year. It is also fun to play the games and sing the songs! I encourage anyone who is thinking about it to give it a try and find out how much fun it is and how much you too will learn from it and be able to carry into your week.
