What is the Altar Guild?

by Sheila Harrington

Most people, if they think about it at all, believe the Altar Guild is a group of little old ladies who fuss around the altar and have tea parties. Not so. The Altar Guild is a group of men and women who act as the set designers for the church and communion service. We design the flowers, order the vestments and other supplies, choose the colors that correspond to the church season, decorate the church, and prepare for the service. We construct tables and other "whatnots" to hold the flowers, stabilize the crosses, etc. And, truth be told, we also clean up afterward, wash the dishes, and sometimes mend the linen. We work two or three at a time, for a couple of hours, one weekend a month. It's an enjoyable way to be of service and to learn more about the church. Contact Sheila Harrington or Suzanne Pipkin (their phone numbers can be found in the parish directory).
