A Lament for the Children of Violence

A Lament for the Children of Violence

- adapted from a litany of the Iona Community

A sound is heard in Ramah,
The sound of bitter weeping.
Rachel is crying for her children;
She refuses to be comforted;
For they are dead.

A sound is heard in Jerusalem,
The sound of bitter weeping.
Pray for the holy innocents of Israel,
Victims of fear and anti-Semitism.
Pray for those in authority.

A sound is heard in Gaza,
The sound of bitter weeping.
Pray for the holy innocents of the camps in
Palestine, victims of displacement and injustice.
Pray for those who govern.

A sound is heard in Mogadishu,
The sound of bitter weeping.
Pray for the holy innocents of Somalia,
And all victims of war and famine on the
Continent of Africa.
Pray for the rulers and generals.

A sound is heard in Sarajevo,
The sound of bitter weeping.
Pray for the holy innocents of the Balkans,
Victims of hatred and war.
Pray for all who suffer from ethnic hatred.

A sound is heard in Bangkok,
The sound of bitter weeping.
Pray for the holy innocents in Thailand,
Victims of lust and poverty.
Pray for the nations of Asia.

A sound is heard in Los Angeles,
The sound of bitter weeping.
Pray for the holy innocents in our midst,
The children who have died this year as
A result of violence in our own city.
Pray for the people of America.
