Meet the Rev. Katie Derose (Editor's Note: Bishop Talton has appointed the Rev. Kathryn Pitkin Derose as a "vocational deacon" here at St. A's. Her first Sunday will be October 25th. As a perpetual deacon, her role (as was that of Pat Hendrickson before her) will be to bring the concerns of the world (in her case, health care in underserved communities) to the church and to bring the church (us) to the concerns of the world. As such, her primary ministry with us will be to invite and challenge us to respond to needs beyond ourselves in creative and helpful ways). The Rev. Kathryn Pitkin Derose was ordained a deacon in 1998 and has served at two multi-cultural parishes, Holy Faith (Inglewood) and Epiphany (Lincoln Heights). Katie has a special connection to St. Augustine's, as she was confirmed here in 1991, soon after re-locating to Los Angeles from Ecuador, where she lived for six years and worked in community health. Katie received her master's and Ph.D. from the UCLA School of Public Health and, for the last 15 years, has worked as a health policy and community health researcher at the RAND Corporation in Santa Monica. She has a special focus on the role of faith-based organizations in health and on health care access for immigrants and other underserved populations, which she brings both to her work at RAND and within the church. In the Diocese, Katie has served as chair of the Health Care Task Force of the Peace & Justice Commission, as a special member of the Health Care Task Force of the Council of Religious Leaders of Los Angeles, and as a clergy member of the Diaconate Committee of the Commission on Ministry. She also served on the Board of Directors and currently serves on the Board of Advisors of Common Ground – the Westside HIV Community Center in Santa Monica. Katie is married to Steve Derose, a physician-researcher at Kaiser Permanente in Pasadena, and together they have 2 sons, Nathanael (8) and Leo (4). Copyright © 2009 St. Augustine by-the-Sea
