Thanksgiving Pie Making Donation of Ingredients Requested
by The Rev. Laura Queen

The Swinging Seniors have once again graciously volunteered to bake pumpkin pies as donations to the Santa Monica Civic Center Thanksgiving Day Dinner for the Homeless. Donations of canned pumpkin, evaporated milk (canned), frozen pie crusts, eggs and sugar should be placed on the steps before the main altar on November 4th, Nov. 11th or Nov. 18th. Cash donations are also accepted to purchase the ingredients, mark "pie baking" in the memo line and submit to the office no later than Nov. 18th. Bakers are invited to attend the Wednesday morning market mass on Nov. 21st at 8:30 a.m. where we will give thanks and then adjourn to the kitchen to make delicious pumpkin pies for those less fortunate than ourselves.

Westside Food Bank
by The Rev. Laura Queen
We have an ongoing ministry of outreach to the Westside Food Bank. They request that you place non-perishable food items in the barrel located in the Narthex (entranceway into the church). This is available every Sunday and we hope to increase our giving during the winter months. Please make the effort to bring in something each week to help care for the hungry individuals and families in our community.

Christmas Gifts for At-Risk Children
by The Rev. Hartshorn Murphy
Each year, we ask your support by committing to purchase a gift for the children of Neighborhood Youth Association (NYA). For a century now, NYA has been an outreach of the Episcopal Church to children from low-income families here on the Westside. The late Susan Amlotte especially encouraged us, as a congregation, to remember these kids during the holidays and so, in her honor and memory, we have the "Susan Tree," which will be in the entranceway of the church beginning Sunday, Nov. 25th.

On the tree will be the "gift hopes" and requests of these children. So stop by, visit with our gift coordinators: Bill Amlotte, Rose Kujawa, Anthony Jondreau and James O'Connell. They will be happy to assist you to select the perfect gift to make some needy child's Christmas special.

Gifts must be returned, wrapped with the provided name tag, no later than Sunday, Dec. 9th so that they can be distributed at the annual NYA holiday party that following week. Each year, St. A's commits to give $5,000 to NYA's operating budget. That pledge comes from your free will birthday and anniversary gifts on the first Sunday of the month. The suggested donation is one dollar per year (e.g. Tenth wedding anniversary = $10 dollars). But any contribution is a blessing and no one is turned away from receiving a blessing that does not make a donation.

Through the annual pledge, birthday and anniversary donations and the Susan Tree presents at Christmas, NYA is surely a part of our larger ministry of service and care.

Body Prayer: A Consideration
by The Rev. Hartshorn Murphy
This is not about having either a good or a bad attitude but rather it is about what might be more broadly called body prayer; the attitudes our bodies assume while in worship … MORE

A Short Form of Self-Examination
From The Practice of Religion by Archibald Knowles, Morehouse-Barlow, 1908
Have I believed in God, the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost and in all that God teaches in the Church and in the Scriptures?

Have I trusted in God and in His Promises?

Have I loved God with all my heart, mind, soul and strength and longed to please Him?

Have I been thankful for God's Blessings and resigned to His Will?

Have I tried to serve God and keep His commandments?

To everything, there is a season and a time to every purpose under heaven
- Ecclesiastes 3:1

by The Rev. Hartshorn Murphy
During our newcomer's classes, we often ask people this question: "Why have you come; what are you looking for?" We do this because it is better to be honest about which needs we can and can not meet before people join our community.… MORE

Breath Prayer
by The Rev. Hartshorn Murphy
The breath prayer is a very short prayer of praise and petition. Those who use it feel that it can become as natural as breathing. Just as breathing goes on naturally in the body, prayer can go on naturally in our being. Thus we can understand the origin of the name more completely when we recall that in Hebrew the word ruach has three meanings: "wind," "breath," and "Spirit."… MORE

The Real Santa
by Jennifer Pavia, Director of Children's Ministries
The real Santa Claus lived a long time ago in a place called Asia Minor, which is now the country of Turkey. His name was Nicholas. His parents were very rich, so they always bought him lots of toys. Nicholas was so kind that he gave them all away to children… MORE
