The Fear Factor by The Rev. Pat Hendrickson On one level it was, "Don't talk to strangers," or "If you don't wear a jacket, you'll get sick." On the grander scale it was huddling by the school lockers in practice A-bomb drills. We live in a culture of fear-it is and always has been a part of our daily lives. Will I have enough money? Am I wearing the right clothes? Will I be accepted? Is my job secure? Is the environment or the food I eat going to give me cancer? It goes on and on. On November 16th during the Sunday education hour (10-11am), we will begin a 6 week adult education class exploring Fear. What is it we are afraid of? Why are we afraid? What is the Christian response to fear? The class will not be a chapter by chapter book study, but rather a chance for us to share our own experience of Fear and to explore ways to free ourselves of it's hold on us and maybe even free up some psychic space for us to enjoy the holidays more. Two books which do an excellent job of addressing the subject are; The Culture of Fear, Why Americans Are Afraid of the Wrong Things, written by Barry Glassner and Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway by Susan Jeffers. Both these books are available for purchase in the St. A's bookstore.
