Calling on the Clergy by The Rev. Hartshorn Murphy Occasionally, the clergy discover that someone has been seriously ill and even hospitalized after they recover and return to church. When this happens, our plaintive cry is" "why didn't you let someone know you were ill?" and people will often respond by saying: "Oh, I didn't want to bother you" or "I know how busy you are, I didn't want to be a bother." When this happens, it is unfortunate. The clergy are here for you. Our greatest delight is to visit with you and offer sacramental and spiritual comfort- especially in times of illness or distress. Sometimes the pain is not physical but spiritual or emotional. When you are in need - feeling apart or adrift from God - that is precise when to call upon your clergy. Indeed, no greater joy is there than being with God's people as companion and friend and spiritual counselor. For routine matters - when is such and such a meeting taking place, what happened at the last vestry meting, how come this or that has been changed - we'd appreciate your calling during office hours. Both Laura and I have regular office hours (printed below) and are available for conversations by phone, by email or in person for an appointment. Further, we are happy to arrange to meet with you after office hours at times convenient to both you and the clergyperson. In addition, Carrie can typically answer most informational questions as well. And so we'd appreciate parishioners not calling the home with routine questions or concerns even the rare complaint. But when you have a spiritual crisis or when you are ill, call upon us freely. We are here for you and our home phone numbers are in the parish directory. Hartshorn is in the office Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and often Friday mornings. (email: hartshorn@saint-augustine.org). Laura is in the office Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
