Mothers Are Different

by Christa Buswell

Mothers are darlings. Thus spoke Oscar Wilde. Yes, they are different. Mothers are patient and kind. Mothers are loving. They calm our fears, soothe our pains. Mothers play with us and sing with us and dance with us. They are always there for us. Yes, mothers are darlings.

Mothers echo many of the qualities we find in God. To a lesser degree, perhaps, but just the same. Is that because God gave them an extra chromosome of love and kindness so that they could put up with us? Let us give thanks for God's special gift to mothers, and to mothers for sharing them with us.

When we try to express our deepest feelings, we often become mute. That is one of the reasons we use gifts in lieu of words that fail us. There are as many different gifts as there are different mothers to receive them. Books by-the-Sea suggests just a few:

  • For the gardening mom - books on gardening and landscaping.
  • For the cooking mom - great cookbooks, flavored oils, special mustards.
  • For the crafty mom - craft books and kits.
  • For the sweet tooth mom - gourmet candies and cookies.
  • For the mom who loves a cup of coffee - St. A brand flavored coffees.
  • For the mom who loves l'heure bleu - fragrant candles.
  • She likes a bit of fashion flair? - handknit scarves, unusual jewelry.
  • Loves to decorate? - unique wall art, gorgeous soil orchids.
  • Adores St. A's? - St. A logo tee-shirts.
  • She loves absolutely everything? - A gift certificate.

I could go on, but you get the idea. You are sure to find something different for your different mom at our bookstore. Something that will tell her of your love and gratitude. Something that will let her know that mothers are darlings.

And now a note for you, Mamsi. "How doing you?" I'm sure that you are the most different and the most darling mom in heaven. Your love sustains me still. Always has. Always will.
