Lent 2007: A Midweek Talk, Discussion
& Potluck Series on Healing
Join us for dinner, fellowship, a brief presentation and some discussion around the topic of "healing" on the Wednesdays in Lent. Bring a dish to share (no desserts please). Nursery and child care will be available, if needed, by sign-up only. The program will be held in Pierson Hall (downstairs) from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.
Feb. 28 - A Medical Doctor explores Healing vs. Cure: Dr. George Ma
March 7 - A Therapist explores Healing of Memories: Rev. Dr. Bill Wallace
March 14 - A Counselor looks at Healing of Relationships: Dr, Lisa O'Connell
March 21 - A Speaker from AA explores Healing from Addictions
March 28 - Join us for supper followed by a Healing Service in the Sanctuary
Women's Retreat
The Women's Retreat will be held on June 1-3, 2007 at the Holy Spirit Retreat Center in Encino. The program will include both large and small group activities and opportunities for discussion and creativity. All women in the parish are invited to attend. Registration materials will be available March 11th on the patio.

Feasting and Fasting: the Lenten Observance

The observance of Lent (from the Old English lengten or lengthening of Spring days) did not emerge until the 4th century. For the first three centuries, the period of fasting in preparation for Easter lasted two or three days. The prescribed forty day fast, suggested by the fasts of Moses (Exodus 34:28), Elijah (I Kings 19:8) and Jesus himself (Matthew 4:2), emerged by 325 A.D., as a time of preparation for baptismal candidates who would be initiated into the faith at their baptisms at the Great Vigil of Easter. During the early centuries, only one meal a day was allowed and meat, fish, eggs, cheese and milk were forbidden.… MORE
