Announcing the Men's Weekend by The Rev. Hartshorn Murphy The annual Men's Retreat will be held again this year at the Mary and Joseph Retreat Center in Rancho Palos Verdes. The dates are Friday, June 10th thru Sunday, June 12th, 2005. Our retreat leader has been confirmed. He is the Rev. Dr. Paul Lawson. Dr. Lawson is the Rector of St. Cross by-the-Sea Episcopal Church in Hermosa Beach and has a long history with the national Contemplative Prayer Movement. You will find his writings in an essay in The Divine Indwelling by Thomas Keating and his own book published last year: Old Wine in New Skins: Centering Prayer and Systems Theory. One reviewer, writing of the book, wrote: "Lawson...has written a surprising but ultimately insightful hybrid of two genres: the systems theory study and the prayer manual. He asserts that the daily meditative practice of Centering Prayer, together with an informed understanding of how institutional structures work, can help clergy and congregations deal with stress and conflicting wishes constructively." Another said: "I believe Dr. Lawson is spot on in saying that knowledge without practice isn't much help. Centering Prayer offers a tried and true spiritual practice that provides benefits to the individual as well as the organization." Former Canon for Social Ministry in the Diocese of Los Angeles, Paul continues his ministry as a church consultant in planning and development and is in high demand as a retreat leader. We are lucky to have him with us for this weekend. Save the date. Registrations will be taken in a few weeks.
