EFM - Education for Ministry

by Deborah Hudson

In our baptism we are called to ministry. But what are we supposed to do? As lay people, we face the difficult task of living our faith in a complex and confusing world. EFM is a small group for learning more about scripture and church history, your faith and how you express it.

EFM fosters a creative spirituality. It's not a program of answers, but a journey to discover how the story of the People of God is our own story. And vice versa. EFM is more than Bible study. EFM groups meet weekly for 2 _ to 3 hours for worship, discussion of our readings, and "theological reflection" - exploring incidents in our lives for deeper scriptural truths and a call to action and ministry. The curriculum runs for four years; participants are asked to commit to one year. Our "school year" begins in the fall and runs through May.

EFM does require time, and that's a scarce commodity in all our lives. But like most things in life, you can only get back what you put in. I have devoted hours in study and discussion to EFM. In return, I have gained so much. Passages of the Bible with which I have struggled have taken on new meaning. And EFM has helped me bring my faith out of the closet of Sunday morning services into the rest of my life.

I invite you to consider joining our EFM group at St. Augustine. Please join me and members of St. Augustine's EFM group between services June 26 in the Mother Jones room to learn more. Or call me - my number is in the parish directory. You can read more about the EFM program and philosophy at http://www.sewanee.edu/EFM/EFMhome.html.
