Dave's Story

by Dave Howard

Having been in a twelve step recovery program for many years, I had no problem believing in God, or a "Higher Power". I could handle the notion that there is an Infinite Intelligence that keeps the universe running on schedule. But, I had been increasingly aware that my personal relationship with God was lacking. Try as I might, through all my normal methods, I just wasn't making the connection.

One night at dinner with a group of friends, I mentioned that I was looking for a church to go to. Why exactly I said those words then and there, or even said them at all, makes sense only with hindsight.

My recollection is that the table suddenly became quiet, everyone looked at me and after a few seconds they looked away and picked up their conversations as if I had not said a word. It was a very awkward moment. I was glad for it to pass.

As we were leaving, Darlene pulled me aside. She said, "you know, just the other day the Reverend at our church said more people would come to church if they were just asked. Would you like to join Abner and me on Sunday at 11:00?"

Growing up loosely Protestant, I had no knowledge of Episcopalians. I hadn't been to church regularly since childhood. But I said yes anyway. From the moment I walked into St. A's, I felt at home. The beauty of the sanctuary, the wonderful personalities of Hartshorn, Joyce and Pat and the service itself was so comfortable. And then I heard the words, "wherever you are in your spiritual journey, you are welcome here." I knew I was home. Immediately I attended a coincidentally rescheduled newcomer's class that I would not have been able to attend otherwise. I joined the church, and a few weeks later at the Easter Vigil, I was baptized.

My prayer is that Christ show me what kind of Christian to be. What I have experienced and felt since first arriving at St. A's has been amazing. I am truly grateful to Darlene and all at the church for being partners with me on this journey.
