Ihude sing cuccu. This cuckoo song of c.1250 charmingly echoes mankind's delight in the good old summertime. Except, when did we last hear a cuckoo sing, loudly or otherwise?

Remember that first day of summer vacation? The start of an endless summer. Lake and mountain, prairie and ocean, the green woods and meadows. And that inevitable snake in the grass, "Mom, I'm bored!" Ah, them were the days …

Frankly and obviously, friends, I don't have a whole lot to say this time around. The muse of columnists has gone on vacation. And what is there to say about summer, except that we like it? So, let me wish you lazy, hazy days, sunshine and rain, blue skies and gray. A time to vacate the workaday world for a bit, to refresh and refurbish and re-grow body and soul. To read a good book or two. "Oh, for a book and a shady nook, either in-a-doors or out."

Have a wonderful summer vacation, kids. Keep your cool, parents. And don't forget the bookies at Books by-the-Sea - we get lonesome without you. Stop in for a visit and a chat, and a look around for something wonderful for dad and grad, bride and groom, birthday boy and girl. Then, go and hear the cuccu sing, and rejoice that God is good.
