Grand Party - Everyone is Invited! by Liesel Friedrich The Reverend Canon Malcolm Boyd will be 80 years old on Sunday, June 8th and everyone in this parish (and in our diocese) is invited to the party at the Cathedral Center. The celebration will last from 5-7pm. A jazz band, party favors, hors d'oevres and flowers are just a few of the elements that will make the festivities sparkle. At St. A's, we had the good fortune to have Malcolm as one of our priests for nearly 15 years. He is the author of more than two dozen books and when you want to learn about him on the "Google" web site, there are 11,800 references to his extraordinary intellectual life, poetry, social and political activism. Like the Buddha, he was born into a life of comfort and prestige and yet he chose the spiritual path. Like the rest of us, he is sometimes shy and humble. Here's Malcolm's descriptive prowess as he explains himself poised on the verge of adulthood: "I smelled clean. I had the antiseptic, remote look of success. My suit was a paragon among suits. My shoes carried the aroma of fresh leather. My ties had an avant-garde relationship with my shirts … I dined on an expense account, and the martini before lunch became a sacrament. I dated very beautiful young starlets. My deodorant, aftershave and cologne made me a walking collection of tasteful smells … I was seething inside with macabre visions of success, while outwardly learning how to cultivate cool, and was in the process of becoming a bright, shiny, pushing, well-groomed snot."
