A Year in the Life of a Newcomer: June 2001 - June 2002 by Christa Buswell
My spiritual journey was one giant detour. I got stuck on that detour for some 50 years or so. To make matters worse, I rode that road like a male driver! Never asking directions, and ignoring all directional signs. Suddenly, I'd had it - or let's say the Holy Spirit held up a STOP sign. I thought of what Yogi Berra once said: "If you see a fork in the road, take it!"
So I did and now what? I'd been attending Episcopal church services with some dear friends once in a while, and liked what I saw and heard. Seemed like a brand of Christianity I could live with.
Why St. Augustine's? I'd like to tell you that it was their wonderful ads, such as "Soul Food Served Here." Or their reputation of which I knew nothing. Actually, it was the only Episcopal Church I knew.
So, I went there one Sunday, with fear and trembling! And right off the bat, this lady shows up at the Peace and gives me a huge hug. What could I do? Fill out one of the visitors cards, keep coming to services, attend the Newcomer's Class, and join the church.
So it began, and it's been some ride! Bible study-boot camp for one who had never even read the Bible, a humbling and bewildering experience. Sunday services-often strange, always and increasingly meaningful. And Communion, that greatest of all mysteries. Finally, that spiritual journey seemed to go somewhere.
And the traveling companions! St. Augustine folks have got to be the most loving, supportive and, yes, fun people in the history of Christendom. There was immediate outreach, hospitality and friendship. No questions asked, I was accepted and made welcome, warts and all.
And a long-suffering clergy taking on this stray with care, understanding and gentle guidance. I had no idea that a church could be such an anchor. You have allayed my fears and uncertainties, and made me feel a member of a vibrant community, truly People of God.
This is not a journey anyone can or should undertake alone. We are not meant to do so, that's why the church was established. Without the mutual support of a Christian family, such as St. A's, you're liable to wind up on a road to nowhere. Believe me, I know!
St. A's has fast become central to my life, and I am grateful to God for leading me there, and to you, St. Augustine's people, for taking me in so graciously and generously. I get just a little bit stronger every week.
To those who might consider joining us: TRY IT, YOU'LL LIKE IT!
