Interim Rector's Report

Ever since Easter St. Augustine's has remained a very busy place!
The Pentecost Day celebration was a wonderful occasion with a Children's Mass and baptism followed by the parish BBQ and "bounce house" for the kids. We joined in the joy of our seminarian, Michael Bell, being ordained at St. John's Cathedral and welcomed him in his new status as Deacon in our liturgies the following day. The healing prayer group was blessed to have a special workshop led by Beth Jahncke, of Healing Touch Spiritual Ministry. Corazon visited us with a presentation of their important work in providing housing to the very poor in Mexico and gave St. Augustine's a plaque honoring our many years of support to this worthy outreach ministry. Newcomer orientation welcomed 14 new persons (including children) to the parish with an informational meeting and light lunch. The children's Sunday School graduation performance was a great delight and we are blessed by having so many families and children. MORE…
St. A's Men's Retreat: My Reflections

Driving up the canyon to the Franciscan Friar's Serra Retreat facility, I recalled Michael Bell's request (the ubiquitous Michael Bell) that I publish my thoughts, summary, or reflections post-retreat in Ebb and Flow. I further recalled the puzzling "what'll I get out of it" reaction of fellow parishioners as I invited, implored, teased them to join this year's experience. My emergent idea − to me 'twas directly from the Spirit − was to ask each participant to write one descriptive word that conveyed his spontaneous mood at the onset of our weekend. MORE…
Women's Retreat, May 14-16, 2010

Peacocks provided background noise. Fog swirled in creating a dense, cloud like atmosphere. Lush gardens invited walks and reflection on this year's theme, "Creating Your Path to the Spirit". The Mary and Joseph Retreat Center in Palos Verdes was an evocative place to be.

Walking the Camino de Santiago

During the Middle Ages, pilgrimage to a holy site was considered the single greatest adventure a person could have (with the exception of warfare). And for Christians from the West, there were three pilgrimages considered the most important: Jerusalem, Rome, and Santiago de Compostela in Spain. During June, I had opportunity to take my own pilgrimage to Santiago.

About the Search Committee and
the Selection of a New Rector

On May 23, 2010, this congregation commissioned the Search Committee at the 10:30 Pentecost service. We did our best to take into account the desires of those who expressed an interest in the search committee, as well as our desire to have a balanced committee that represented all the major elements in our community. Not all desires could be accommodated, but we think we have an excellent group. We think everyone brings a unique viewpoint and a deep commitment to this parish. This is a weighty responsibility. It is probably the most important thing we will do together as a community for many years to come.
