Epiphany Adult Education Class

by The Rev. Joyce Stickney

Beginning January 5th and running through February 9th, the Rev. Joyce Stickney will be facilitating a class reflecting on the book, Gifted by Otherness: Gay and Lesbian Christians in the Church by L. William Countryman and M.R. Ritley (who came to the Episcopal Church through St. A's), during the Sunday education hour 10-11 a.m. All are welcome to sign up for this class and purchase the book in the church bookstore. Over the past few years, the discussion and debate which poses ordinary gay and lesbian Christians as a major threat to Christianity has escalated and taken center stage. Meanwhile the genuine pastoral and emotional needs, the right of self-definition, and the prophetic gifted ministries of gay and lesbian Christians have been ignored and denied. Ritley and Countryman proclaim the radical word of the gospel, which is about "God's outrageous desire to include every variety of person we can think of, and then create yet more ... in the context of their personal stories, scripture, and humor" (page 29). In looking at the mission statement of St. Augustine's church, this book is a gift to challenge us to truly live into our mission.
