What's a Pre-loved Book?

by Christa Buswell

A pre-loved book is one that a fellow parishioner has read and loved enough to want to share it with someone else. That means the book is donated to Books by-the-Sea, then sold to another potential lover at a deep discount. (Hey!, we're a business. Got to make some money.)

We invite original lovers of a special book to donate that book to the bookstore, and ask them to include a little note telling why it breached their defenses, invaded their minds, maybe even led to some changes in their lives. (such warlike imagery for so gentle an emotion …) Let's just say it's a novel, intimate kind of book club.

So, come and share your love with another. That is, if you can bear to part with it. I can't bear to part with mine, that's why I bought and donated two copies of The Ironic Christian's Companion: Find the Marks of God's Grace in the World. The author is Patrick Henry - yes, a remote relative of that "give me liberty or give me death" revolutionary firebrand. I'll include a note telling you why that one literally changed my life.

May St. Valentine bring you much love in all its permutations and guises. And, of course, we have lots of little tokens for the loves in your lives. Love's in bloom at Books by-the-Sea. Corny, but true. Happy Valentine's Day!! Go forth and love one another.

P.S. Pre-loved books are identified by a red heart sticker. Innovative, isn't it?
