Watching and Listening - Winter Term Adult Ed. by The Rev. Hartshorn Murphy O.K. A while back, one of our members gifted me with a series of lectures on the Hebrew Scriptures on VHS tape, published by The Teaching Company. As there were 24 lectures, 30 minutes long each, and whereas my doctor again told me that I needed to get more (some?) exercise, I thought: "exercise bike (unused) + bible lectures (unwatched) = opportunity!" I discovered a rich resource for learning and the hope of health renewed. Now, The Teaching Company has published a Christian Scriptures series: "Great Figures of the New Testament" taught by the same solid teacher I sweated with (physically and intellectually) months ago. Dr. Amy-Jill Levine is the Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Professor at Vanderbilt University Divinity School/Graduate Dept. of Religion. Before coming to Vanderbilt, she was Dean of the Dept. of Religion at Swarthmore College. A "talking head" but a brilliant one! In this series, Dr. Levine offers a series of lectures on characters in the Christian Scriptures (e.g. Judas Iscariot, Paul, the Herodians, the Gentile Mother, the Samaritan Woman and so on). Especially for those who find it difficult to do the weekly readings for other adult Sunday school classes, this series is made for you. Come: watch and listen and then share together. (And, please, no sweating!) This series begins Jan. 6, 2008 and meets Sundays between services. See the Sunday bulletin for more information closer to the start date.
