Help Needed for Christmas Dinner

by The Rev. Pat Hendrickson

On Saturday, December 23rd St. Augustine will once again host a dinner for the homeless. For the first time since its inception, Mimi Adams will not be here to spearhead the event. Mimi's husband Ken, her daughter Julie and others who have pitched in over the years wish for the dinner to continue as a memorial to Mimi. Ken has asked for our help with this endeavor.

At this time, the primary need is for persons, young and old, to help with setting up the parish hall and serving the meals. Set up begins about 8 am and doors open between 9 and 10 am. Meals are served until about 2 to 3 pm.

What better way to reach out to the community during the season of giving. Put the date on your calendar now and plan to spend 2 to 4 hours helping with this wonderful ministry. Within the next month we will have sign up sheets out on patio and as we receive more information we will pass it on.

Winter Family Retreat at the Episcopal Camp at Wrightwood, January 19-21, 2007

This year the Fall Family Retreat scheduled to be held at Camp Stevens in Julian has been re-scheduled for a Winter Camp at our Episcopal Camp in Wrightwood, California. Nestled in the beautiful San Gabriel Mountains at an altitude of 6,000 feet, the mountain setting is perfect for winter activities. There is a warm fireplace as well as plenty of hot chocolate. Plan for fellowship, fun and maybe a little skiing at the near by Mountain High Ski Resort. Save the date for this not to be missed parish event. One of the cabins there was refurbished through a grant from St. A's and is named "St. Augustine by-the-Sea Cabin." Look for it when you go. Registration materials available on the patio.

Advent: The Beginning and End of All Things

The Season of Advent (the word means "coming") is a schizophrenic season in that it has a dual personality. It is the season in which we look back with fondness to the first coming of the Christ as an infant in Bethlehem… MORE

The 22nd Annual Mimi Adams Holiday Luncheon

by The Rev. Pat Hendrickson
Twenty-two years ago she enlisted her family and friends and got St. A's to give her the parish hall in which to feed hungry people on Christmas Eve. That event was the beginning of FAITH (Family Assistance Involving The Homeless), a non-profit organization dedicated to serving the homeless in Santa Monica … MORE

Yes Francesca, There is a St. Nicholas!
by Jennifer Pavia, Director of Children's Ministries
What is Christmas about? We all know it's when Jesus, the Son of God, was born in a manger. It is a happy time of rejoicing and celebration. And it's also a time that we remember another man. His name is St. Nicholas. We call him Santa Claus, and here is his story. … MORE

The Circle of Gratitude

For me, the word gratitude implies that I have received something. A warm feeling is felt from someone else's generosity. In particular, I am grateful to receive unexpected gifts from those who owe me nothing… MORE

"Wherever you are in your spiritual journey, you are welcome…"
by Melinda Hamilton, former St. A's Member
When I think of St. Augustine, I think of those words. I've been in a lot of Episcopal churches in the four years since I left St. A's. Perhaps it is the luck of the draw, but I've not heard those words anyplace else. I miss them … MORE
