Estate Planning & Charitable Giving

by Peter V. Haight

Ben Harrington of the Episcopal Church Foundation made a presentation about the activities and purposes of that foundation, which include grant making for scholarships, investment services for Episcopal institutions, and support for stewardship and planned giving within churches. He urged those present to form a planned giving effort for the parish. He spoke of the creation of a legacy society for fellowship and support of those who had taken action to include the parish or the diocese in their wills, purchased a gift annuity, or established a charitable trust with the church as beneficiary.

Such planned giving programs are common among colleges and other church institutions, but our own diocese has been slow to start these programs which are increasingly important in building long-term support and permanence for our institutions.

Planned giving for charities should be a part of any estate plan. They can result in substantial tax savings, increase transfer of savings to the next generation, and increase current income returns from investments, compared with many mutual funds or other investment vehicles.

The Church Charities Foundation has been established in our diocese to shepherd the growth of these efforts. I am a member of that trustee board. I will be getting more information and will be available to consult with any parish members with questions about planned giving or estate planning.
