Film Night at St Augustine-by-the-Sea

by The Rev. Laura V. Queen

Linking Christian faith and theology with the arts is not entirely new. Christians have enjoyed a rich history of leaning heavily on the arts in order to carry out the tasks of bearing witness to the Christian faith. The impressive Cathedrals of the Middle Ages attempted to express Christian truth through their stained glass, beautiful murals, ornate ceilings and soaring arches. Architecture, acoustics, the careful use of light and shadows, even the smell of incense – all of these have served as media for the communication of the gospel. Film offers us a creative language, an imaginative language of movement and sound that can bridge the gap between the rational and the aesthetic, the sacred and the secular, the church and the world, and thereby open up new possibilities for us to interpret the gospel.

At our first film night at St Augustine’s we viewed the Oscar award winning documentary film The March of the Penguins. This was a great way to begin this new and exciting program. Our new popcorn popper was fired up and we munched our way through the beautiful, chilling story about the emperor penguins of Antarctica.

Film Night is an opportunity for all members to participate in the viewing and discussion of films and of course to consume popcorn and snacks as you see fit to do so. Please save the date for our next Film Night, Saturday, May 13, 7pm – 9pm. We will view and discuss the Oscar Award winning film Crash.

“What makes Crash so noteworthy for an American film is that it dares to be about something. Crash dares to deal with racism, both explicit and implicit." Tom Condon

(As this film is “R” rated, a children’s film will be shown for kids.) If you need child care please sign up on the clip board on the patio if you need it.

Admission, Popcorn, Candy and Drinks are FREE!
