Stuff You Oughta Support

by The Rev. Hartshorn Murphy

Stuff, the Parish Store, located at 2924 Main Street (at Kinney), has been hit hard by the recession that began following the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11th and the seemingly permanent crisis following it. Sales have been off an average of 57% from last year. And although some economists are saying that the recession is nearly over, the retail sector of the economy - with the exception of home and auto sales due to low interest rates - has not recovered.

In spite of this reality, the store continues to provide a valuable service to the community. It is a place where homeless persons and the working poor can come and get nearly new clothes for a job interview. It is a place where donations are carefully and lovingly sorted and items that are gently used and nearly new are weekly sent to the Mission to be distributed to the poorest of our brothers and sisters in downtown L.A. And, it is a place wherein St. A's members/volunteers find a clear sense of community and service. The vision for the store, that it would generate funds for charity, has been only partially met and in this present economy, is badly compromised.

For this reason, I ask that you consider Stuff when you need to buy a greeting card or give a gift. If the members, attenders and friends of St. Augustine's would routinely support the store, it would go a long way in helping the store remain vibrant and alive. If each of you would recommend the store to your friends, co-workers and neighbors, it would enable us to meet our goals of generating funds to help others.

I am not asking you to do the store a favor. Stuff is worthy of your support and you will find quality merchandize there at a reasonable price. What I am asking is that Stuff be given the "first thought."

When you need to shop, shop at home.
