Taking the Bible Seriously but not Literally ... by The Rev. Hartshorn Murphy
This enigmatic line is the subtitle of Marcus Borg's new book Reading the Bible Again for the First Time. (If that sounds familiar, you may recall a class being offered last year on Marcus's bestselling Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time). In his new book, Marcus seeks to reject the false choice between fundamentalism and rejection the Bible offhand as meaningless to contemporary lives. Instead, the author challenges us to reconcile sacred texts with scientific and critical thinking and our deepest need for authentic spirituality. Peter Gomes, author of The Good Book, said of this text: "It takes the Bible back from the specialists and makes it available to the thoughtful reader in all its complexity and splendor: nothing short of a blessing, even a miracle!"
Join me in studying Reading the Bible Again, over five weeks, beginning Sunday, April 14th. The book, priced at about $15.00, will be available in the Bookstore. Sign up now on the Patio.
